Tahrir after GEM

The historic Egyptian Museum is not a smaller copy of GEM. It asks for a different kind of looking.

Tahrir works through density, proximity and the history of archaeological display. That contrast is the reason to visit after—or instead of—GEM.

Use two object priorities

Early kingship, Middle Kingdom sculpture, funerary groups or the history of museum display can each organize the rooms. Do not assume an object named in an old guide remains in the same gallery.

Read the building too

Opened in 1902, the museum belongs to the history of collecting and classification in Egypt. Historic cases and long sightlines reveal earlier curatorial assumptions as well as ancient material.

Keep central Cairo inside the plan

Allow time for security, traffic and the difference between map distance and a comfortable transfer. The Museum of Islamic Art can be an alternative anchor, not an automatic add-on.
